Bags full of stories!

Posted on April 18, 2018

This Spring I have been working on an intergenerational project that combines my love of textiles as an artist and my love of storytelling.

Commissioned by Newhaven Heritage Society, who together with Judith Crabb had successfully bid for a grant from the HLF, I have been working with P5 classes from Victoria Primary School in Newhaven in North Edinburgh and with the wonderful Haven Group who have kindly shared their stories with us.

Today we asked the children to share the bags and the stories with the Haven Group. These resources will continue to be used by pupils in years to come.

I designed the three themed handling or memory boxes in the form of ‘fishwives ‘pockets’ to reflect the stories and these we then filled with items representing the stories shared.

Pearls of wisdom within

The fourth ‘pocket’ with a pick and mix of stories will be available for people to take into the local care homes and with the wider community during the Newhaven Gala and Heritage Open day displays.

There will be a celebration of the project on Wednesday 25th April 2018 at the school from 1.15.
